Meet Craig Montour – A graduate of our Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical Program!

With Craig now entering his 12th year in the Electrical Trade with Hydro One, he began his journey at OSTTC in the Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical Program! A Pre-Apprenticeship is designed as a transition step to finding an apprenticeship. These style programs include all of the in-class and practical training for the first year apprentice. Through this program, Craig was able to receive hands-on training which he thoroughly enjoyed! He was given the opportunity to learn about the equipment, how to operate the tools and learned how to install! Craig reflects back to the program with,

“my favorite part of the program was all the hands on learning we did.”

Craig is now apart of the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers. Through them, he currently has employment with Hydro One. Craig’s day-to-day duties varies. Some days he can be found installing breakers, switches or transformers with numerous types of voltages. Craig’s position and educational background allows him to install equipment from 120 volts up to 500,000 volts!! With his career, Craig mentions that he’s able to enjoy working outside, working with cranes, installing various types of electrical equipment and working in a team atmosphere. But most of all, Craig’s favourite thing about his career is that gets to work alongside his son!

Craig continues to work hard everyday and strides towards transitioning into a supervisory role. “I now feel like I possess not only the knowledge but also the confidence in such a challenging workplace.” Craig’s advice to those thinking of applying to a program at OSTTC is

“to go challenge yourself. Learn a new skill and stick with it no matter how difficult it can be at times. I never imagined myself doing what I am, and now I’m entering my 12th year in the electrical trade with Hydro One.”
