Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of OSTTC Trades Instructors

The people who make OSTTC such a unique place to learn are at the heart of the Ogwehoweh Skills and Trades Training Centre. Today, we are excited to introduce you to our two dedicated trades instructors, Richard Green and James Hill, who have played a vital role in shaping the education of our trades students. We sat down with them to talk about their experiences at OSTTC, their passion for teaching, and what keeps them motivated. Together, they shared insights into their daily routines, the programs they develop, and their dedication to student success. Here's what they had to say:

Can you walk us through a typical day as an instructor at OSTTC?

We start our day pretty early, even before the actual start time, so we can both be on the same page about what needs to be done before students arrive. A lot of preparation goes into the day, especially for the practical instruction. We have to make sure we have enough steel and electrodes and that the equipment is in good working order. Each of us has strengths in certain areas, and we make sure to use those skills to give our students the best possible experience.

What inspired you to become a Trades instructor?

For some, "inspired" might not be the right word. Sometimes you stumble into trades education by being invited by someone you know and realizing you enjoy it. It's a very gratifying experience, knowing that you're helping to change someone's life in some small way. We feel privileged to be part of OSTTC and contribute to the community.

How do you approach developing programs like Welding Techniques (Level 1) and Intro. to Metal Fabricator (Level 1)?

For the Welding Techniques program, we focus on making sure students can not only weld with a high level of skill but also talk about what they know confidently. If they fall apart in an interview, we haven’t done our job. The Introduction to Metal Fabricator program came about because one of our employer partners, Walters Group, had a demand for Fabricators. We developed a Level 1 program that met their needs, and it’s been very successful. Both programs have produced great results for students.

Could you share some memorable moments or success stories from your time teaching at OSTTC?

There have been so many memorable moments, but they really belong to the students. It’s great to see someone realize their potential and watch it lead to life-changing opportunities. A great example is Wesley Martin, who joined the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and surprised us by showing up at the shop before Christmas in his brand new pick-up truck. Another is Mae Miller, who started with the WRITE program, got interested in Millwrighting, went through the Welding Techniques program, and ended up being hired.

What strategies do you use to keep your students engaged and motivated?

Keeping students engaged is tough, especially with a lot of theory work. It can get pretty dry. We mix in stories, videos, and examples from our own experiences to help. Most people are excited to get into the welding booth, but that gets boring too after a while. We challenge them to aim for higher standards in their welding, especially in terms of appearance, to keep them motivated.

What challenges do students face when preparing for programs like Welding Techniques and Intro. to Metal Fabricator, and how do you help them overcome those challenges?

A lot of people come in thinking they can’t do it. We believe they can—as long as they want to. Our process builds on small successes. Before they even realize it, they’ve passed their first weld test. There are barriers in the community that are outside our control, but once someone gets going, we often see them find ways to overcome those barriers.

How do you create a positive and inclusive learning environment?

Every student has something they’re good at, even if they don’t know it yet. Our job is to find that skill and help them build on it. We also encourage students to share their knowledge with others, which helps build their confidence and creates a more inclusive environment where everyone is valued.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Welding or Metal Fabrication?

Just get started. There’s no better time than right now. Once you learn and master those skills, they’re yours for life.

How do you stay updated on trends and developments in the trades job market?

We subscribe to industry publications and work with organizations that promote technical skills. We also attend trade shows and conferences to stay on top of the latest technologies and techniques.

Looking ahead, what are your goals as an instructor at OSTTC?

We are really looking forward to the development of the 1039 Multi-Trades Building. Moving all of our trades programs to that location will create a lot of new opportunities for us and the students.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

We're thankful for the opportunity to have taught so many wonderful students.

---

On behalf of OSTTC, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Richard Green and James Hill for their dedication to their students and the trades. Their commitment to helping others learn and grow has had a lasting impact on the lives of many. Thank you for all that you do!
