Community Collaboration: OSTTC's Partnerships for Prosperity

At OSTTC, we are dedicated to offering education and training to students who often face a range of barriers to their career aspirations. By removing these obstacles and providing comprehensive support, we ensure our learners have a clear path to success. Our operations span key locations like the GREAT Opportunity Centre and Kayanase, enriching our students' educational experiences with strong community ties. Here are some of the community collaborations that make our programs so successful.

👉 GRETI: Empowering Indigenous Workforce Development

Grand River Employment and Training Inc. (GRETI) is the umbrella organization overseeing various divisions, including GREAT, OSTTC, and Kayanase. GRETI is an Indigenous-led, non-profit organization committed to empowering clients through employment and training support. Their mission is to increase Indigenous representation in the workforce and create sustainable careers.

Located in downtown Ohsweken, GRETI's facility symbolizes Haudenosaunee village structures and hosts multiple services like employment training, computer training, trades training, language classes, and business development. GRETI's efforts are funded through Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), Employment Ontario (EO), and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), and they collaborate with various partners, like us at OSTTC, to enhance opportunities and programs for clients and employers.

👉 GREAT: Honouring Indigenous Traditions Through Education and Training

GREAT (Grand River Employment and Training) is one of the divisions under GRETI. Since their inception in 2003, they have focused on providing local, accessible, and culturally relevant training to meet our community's needs.

GREAT is instrumental in creating learning environments that honour Indigenous traditions and knowledge. They offer services to Six Nations band members, job seekers, and employers across Ontario. Through this collaboration, they enhance job readiness and provide tailored training programs, ensuring individuals are well-prepared for their careers.

Some of our programs run out of the GREAT Opportunity Centre, which includes facilities for metal fabrication, welding, and classrooms. OSTTC’s partnership with GREAT provides additional resources and support that align with our commitment to culturally relevant and accessible training. This collaboration enhances job readiness and equips our students with the skills necessary for success, ensuring they are well-prepared for their careers.

👉 Embracing Land-Based Learning with Kayanase

Kayanase is an ecological restoration and native plant nursery that has developed outdoor learning spaces, including yurts and an outdoor kitchen along the Grand River. This environment allows OSTTC students to connect with nature and learn traditional ecological knowledge.

OSTTC offers workshops, education, and training from a land-based approach to encompass mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. These programs foster cultural confidence, environmental stewardship, and practical skills. Kayanase's facilities include a greenhouse, cook station, yurts, and a turtle garden. Partnering with Kayanase enables us to integrate ecological awareness into our curriculum, promoting the preservation of natural resources and environmental responsibility.

👉 Employment Ontario: Enhancing Employment Opportunities

In 2017, Ontario passed The Indigenous Institutes Act, recognizing Indigenous-owned and operated institutes as a crucial part of the province’s post-secondary education system. The government has also invested in supporting Indigenous job seekers by funding skills training for in-demand careers.

Employment Ontario is a vital partner in our mission to support workforce development. Through their resources, OSTTC offers comprehensive employment services, including career counselling, job matching, and apprenticeship opportunities. This collaboration ensures our community members have access to the support needed to succeed in today’s job market.

OSTTC’s partnerships with GRETI, GREAT, Kayanase, and Employment Ontario are essential in providing our students with the education, training, and support they need to succeed. These collaborations equip our community members with the skills and confidence to excel in their careers while preserving our cultural heritage.
