Alli's journey to success began with the GED program at OSTTC, where she found the s guidance and encouragement she needed to thrive. From the start, OSTTC created an environment where Alli could feel confident and capable in her learning. "It was so easy to show up and be there every day," she reflects, noting that the program's welcoming atmosphere made all the difference. The supportive people at OSTTC, including her teacher Paul, were a constant source of motivation. "Paul was a great teacher. He explained things very well, and there were no stupid questions," Alli recalls, highlighting how comfortable she felt asking questions and engaging in her learning.
The program's balance of challenge and support helped Alli grow without feeling overwhelmed. "I was challenged, but I wasn’t pushed out of my comfort zone," she says. A highlight of her time in the program was discovering a love for science, particularly biology. She also had a personal breakthrough with math. "I finally learned how to do long division, and it stuck this time," she says.
Upon completing her GED, Alli felt empowered to take on new challenges. With the confidence she gained from her studies at OSTTC, she began her new role as a trainee at The Land-Based Healing Centre. There, she applies her skills in both indoor and outdoor tasks, such as crafting ribbon skirts, teaching sewing to clients, and harvesting crops.
"The GED Program gave me the confidence to know that I can do anything, and now I'm using that confidence in my job," Alli says, reflecting on how OSTTC set her up for success.
Looking ahead, Alli is eager to continue growing in her career. She plans to build on her education by gaining additional certifications, such as SafeTalk and hopes to pursue more outdoor activities while teaching others the skills she’s learning. "Now that I have the education on paper, I want to take my career in new directions, especially in outdoor training," she explains.
After completing her studies, Alli also took part in programs like Youth Job Connection (YJC), CPR, and Worker’s Health and Safety, further expanding her skill set. “The support from OSTTC was incredible. I loved coming to school every day and being part of such an inspiring environment,” Alli says.
Her advice to others considering applying to OSTTC is clear: “Make sure you are ready to commit to it.” With the foundation she built at OSTTC, Alli is now on a path to a fulfilling career, and her story shows the impact that dedicated support and education can have on a person's future.
