Meet Dana Isaacs

Meet Dana, a recent graduate of the Residential Construction Program who transformed her life through hard work and self-discovery. Her journey shows the impact of dedicated instructors, a comprehensive curriculum, and self-belief.

Before joining the program, Dana hadn't found a career path that excited her. "I really enjoyed this program," she recalls. "I learned a lot and had to relearn things I was taught wrong." The supportive atmosphere, especially from her instructor, Findley, made a big difference. "Findley was great—friendly, open, supportive, and had a sense of humour. He made it easy for me to ask questions and helped me through them."

One significant challenge was overcoming self-doubt. "I had a huge problem caring what others thought of what I do," she admits. Through self-encouragement and determination, she pushed past her fears. "I told myself, 'I’m here to learn. I have to take every chance I can because it’s a short program. Who cares if someone thinks I’m doing it wrong? At least I’m trying, and I can’t learn if I don’t make mistakes.' By the end, I did what I wanted without caring what others thought."

The program introduced her to various aspects of construction, from woodworking to complex tasks like roofing and drywalling. "My favourite thing was learning to frame walls—not just four walls like a box, but making partitions and seeing how everything comes together to make a whole house."

Currently working as an industrial electrician helper, Dana continues to build on her skills. "My future goals are to get hired by a non-union framing/construction company and gain more knowledge and skills. I also plan to join the carpentry union next year."

For those considering a program at OSTTC, Dana offers enthusiastic advice: "Don't think about it, just do it. It’s no time wasted, and you can learn everything quickly. It’s a gateway to more career options and learning something new."

Dana's story is an inspiring example of how determination, a positive mindset, and a supportive educational environment can lead to personal and professional fulfillment. Her journey from uncertainty to discovering a passion for construction highlights the transformative power of education and the importance of seizing every opportunity to learn and grow.

OSTTC is proud of Dana’s accomplishments throughout her time here, and we wish her much success in her future endeavours!
