After a long 2-year break from school, Mallory found herself in an OSTTC classroom as a student in the Introduction to Healthcare Program! This Introduction to Healthcare Program is aimed at individuals who are interested in a career in any area of the healthcare field in Ontario. Going from lectures of 400 people at McMaster University to a small classroom where you are noticed everyday, Mallory knew that OSTTC was the best place to get back into her educational journey.
With the extra support and guidance from her Grandma, Mallory overcame her hesitance to enroll in the program.
Mallory’s Instructor, classmates and OSTTC staff instilled a new drive in Mallory who wanted to go to class everyday with the motivation to learn. With this transition, Mallory notes that she felt incredible.
During the 16-week program, Mallory and her classmates were able to have tons of hands-on training. One experience that Mallory recalls was being able to learn the proper usage of needles and how to inject an IV using an orange! In reflection to this, Mallory says that
Mallory recognizes her Fanshawe Instructor Lynette as someone who kept the lessons interesting and makes you want to be involved.
Another key aspect that Mallory took away from this program was obtaining certification in First Aid/CPR and Psychological First Aid! With this program building in opportunities to obtain these certifications, Mallory can now carry this with her while she continues to work toward her goals! With this program being her starting ground, Mallory encourages others who are interested in a similar path to consider enrolling. “From learning how to handle your inner emotions, how to handle other peoples emotions, or what to do in a life or death situation, this program can help assist you in whatever goal direction you want to achieve.”
Since successfully completing the Introduction to Healthcare Program at OSTTC, Mallory is now enrolled with Fanshawe College in a 2 year Social Service Worker program. Once completed, she will obtain an official diploma in Social Service Worker. Mallory will then further her education by continuing in a 1 year Addictions and Mental Health certificate program. Mallory’s future goal is to one day be in the field of Behavioural Psychology with troubled children and inmates of the prison system. She plans to open her own practice on Six Nations so that all community members can have affordable and available services for behavioural and psychological issues such as addictions, trauma, neglect and more.
When asked what advice she would give to those interested in the Introduction to Healthcare Program, Mallory says
Mallory acknowledges the resources that were provided by OSTTC staff. “The staff offers monthly check-ins to see how you are doing because they want you to succeed, they want you to thrive. It is truly amazing how much everyone will assist you because they want you to succeed in any way.”
OSTTC is wishing Mallory a bright future while she continues her education with Fanshawe College. We look forward to seeing what Mallory will accomplish. If you would like to learn more about our programming and what we offer, please visit www.osttc.com.
