Meet Nicki Bomberry

Nicki Bomberry's journey through the Human Resources Essentials program at OSTTC was nothing short of transformative. In her own words, Nicki described the experience as "eye-opening," tackling a full-time program condensed into just 16 weeks. Despite the intensity, Nicki found the program to be a revelation, thanks in no small part to her instructor Lynette, whom she considers a "godsend." Lynette's guidance played a crucial role in helping Nicki grasp the intricacies of HR and understand the essence of being a valuable member of an HR department.

One standout aspect of Nicki's experience was the shift in perspective from being an employee, to seeing organizations through the lens of HR. Learning the legalities and the dedication required to shape a workforce that benefits both the organization and its employees, left a lasting impression on her. Nicki emphasized the importance of dedication to doing what's right, underlining the ethical responsibilities that come with a role in human resources.

One notable challenge Nicki faced was adapting to a specific assignment style, a hurdle compounded by her 26-year hiatus from formal education. Jamie, the class assignment guru, became Nicki's invaluable support system. Learning to structure assignments, organize information chronologically, and present it effectively were all skills she mastered. As well as the importance of note-taking, proving beneficial for quizzes and projects.

Looking towards the future, Nicki's aspirations have evolved. Originally drawn to law enforcement, life's changes led her to the realization that she wants to help people navigate the workforce. Drawing from her customer service experience, Nicki envisions herself as a crucial support system for employees and organizations, emphasizing the need to understand and address their unique needs. The Human Resource program at OSTTC played a pivotal role in shaping Nicki's career goals.

Completing the program clarified her desire to be a part of an Indigenous Labour and Relations board, where she can contribute to creating employment opportunities for community members and uphold the accountability and transparency of organizations. Nicki envisions a future where she plays a vital role in alleviating lateral violence in her community, promoting growth, and fostering a culture of mutual support.

Reflecting on her favorite part of the program, Nicki points to the unwavering support she received from OSTTC employees. Their consistent check-ins and encouragement. From the program's inception to its completion, it left a lasting impact, turning OSTTC into not just an educational institution but a community of supportive mentors and cheerleaders. When asked about advice for potential students, Nicki's response was simple yet powerful: "just do it." Despite any reservations or the length of time away from school, OSTTC is here to provide support, ensuring that success is a shared journey.

As Nicki aptly put it, "they succeed when you succeed." Her story is a testament to resilience, transformation, and the fulfillment of dreams through dedication and the right support system. When reaching out to her professor after the completion of the program , Lynette had great things to say - “Nikki was a delight to have in class. She focused on each days work/ assignments and lessons diligently. Nikki showed such great enthusiasm in class and participated in discussions confidently. It was a pleasure to watch her confidence grow with each of the courses she undertook in the Human Resource Essentials program. I am confident she will go onto great things in her future and wish her all the luck moving forward in her career.”

Way to go, Nicki! OSTTC is so proud!
