Being a student today looks a lot different than it did just a few years ago. In 2025, students are facing a unique mix of challenges, some new, some ongoing, and all very real. At OSTTC, we understand how tough the road can be. Whether you're just starting out or trying to figure out what’s next, here’s a look at what students are up against…and how we’re here to help.
Rising Costs, Tough Choices
One of the biggest hurdles for students right now is money. Tuition fees keep going up, and so does the cost of just living day-to-day. Rent, groceries, transportation—it all adds up fast. Many students have to take on part-time jobs to make ends meet, which makes it harder to focus on school. It’s a constant balancing act.
School Pressure is Real
Course loads are heavy. Deadlines pile up. And the pressure to do well can be overwhelming, especially when students are thinking about how competitive the job market is. For those learning online or in hybrid classrooms, it can be tough to stay engaged and motivated.
Mental Health Matters
Stress, burnout, and anxiety are becoming more common. The uncertainty of today’s world only adds to the pressure. A lot of students struggle to find mental health support that’s accessible and affordable, which can leave them feeling isolated or stuck.
Balancing It All
Managing school, work, family, and personal time is a huge challenge. Add in social obligations and the endless distractions of being online, and it’s easy to feel pulled in too many directions. Finding time for rest and self-care can be tough, but it’s more important than ever.
Learning in a Digital World
Technology is everywhere in education now. From AI tools to digital platforms and social media, students are constantly plugged in. While tech can help with learning, it can also hurt focus and productivity. And many students still prefer in-person learning over virtual options.
Looking Ahead with Uncertainty
Graduation doesn’t always mean a clear path forward. Today’s job market is changing quickly, and students worry about how to keep up. Building skills outside the classroom and making strong connections is more important than ever—but not always easy to do.
SO…How Can We Help?
At OSTTC, we’re doing everything we can to support students through these challenges. Our programs focus on hands-on training and real-world skills that lead to tangible opportunities. We’re proud to offer education that is rooted in Indigenous culture and guided by community values. Our goal is to help students feel supported, not just in school, but in life.
Comprehensive Student Support
We believe in supporting our students every step of the way. Our dedicated Student Services team conducts wellness checks before programs begin and maintains regular check-ins throughout your educational journey. We also offer tutoring, career counselling, and other support services to help you succeed.
Culturally Grounded Education
Preserving Indigenous culture is at the core of our educational philosophy. Through our land-based education approach, we aim to reconnect our students with their cultural heritage. We offer workshops, education, and training that encompass mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health, fostering a deeper connection to Indigenous traditions and ways of life.
Career-Focused Training
We prepare students for meaningful careers in industries that are in high demand. Our programs in residential construction, welding, and metal fabrication equip students with practical, hands-on skills that meet the needs of today’s workforce. Each course is designed to build confidence and expertise, ensuring that students graduate ready to step into rewarding roles.
Strong Community Partnerships
Our collaboration with Grand River Employment and Training (GREAT) extends the resources available to students. This partnership provides access to job placements, apprenticeships, and additional training opportunities, creating a clear path from education to employment.
We know that being a student in 2025 isn’t easy. But you’re not in it alone.
