As Indigenous-led institutions work toward equitable education for Indigenous Peoples across Canada, new research shows that public support in Ontario is strong. At the recent National Indigenous Education Symposium held in Halifax, the Indigenous Institutes Consortium (IIC) shared findings from their latest public survey on reconciliation, conducted in partnership with the Environics Institute. The survey, Ontarians on Reconciliation 2024, highlights a clear call for better education and training opportunities for Indigenous students—one that OSTTC proudly contributes to.
The survey reveals a promising message: Ontarians believe in supporting Indigenous-led education. With 85% of Ontarians stating it is "very or somewhat important" to enable Indigenous students to learn in a discrimination-free environment, it’s clear there’s widespread agreement on fostering inclusive and supportive spaces. This aligns closely with OSTTC’s mission to provide a culturally grounded, empowering environment where Indigenous students can succeed.
Advancing reconciliation goes hand in hand with expanding access to equitable education for Indigenous Peoples. According to the survey, 84% of Ontarians believe that ensuring Indigenous students have the same access to education as other Canadians should be a high or medium priority. OSTTC and other Indigenous Institutes have long been committed to this mission, championing educational opportunities that respect and preserve Indigenous culture.
Education’s impact goes beyond individual success; it also contributes to Canada’s economy. Survey data shows that 72% of Ontarians recognize that increasing the number of Indigenous graduates would positively affect the nation’s economy. With a strong graduation rate of 75-85%, Indigenous Institutes like OSTTC not only empower individuals but also strengthen communities, creating a ripple effect of opportunity and growth.
Despite the clear public support, Indigenous Institutes continue to face funding challenges. Many Ontarians may not know that Indigenous Institutes operate independently, without the same level of core funding as publicly funded colleges and universities. Yet, Indigenous Institutes deliver significant results, with over 90% of their graduates moving on to quality employment. OSTTC stands alongside other Indigenous Institutes in calling on the government for fair, stable funding, which would allow us collectively to continue delivering high-quality education and essential skill development.

This approach not only honours the cultural roots of our students but also ensures that their education supports community growth.
