If you're looking for a career that's hands-on, rewarding, and full of opportunities, the skilled trades might be the perfect fit. Across Ontario and Canada, there’s a growing demand for skilled workers in fields like carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, welding, and more. This isn’t just a trend. It’s a chance to build a stable future while making a real impact in your community.
The Growing Need for Skilled Trades Workers
Ontario is facing a shortage of skilled tradespeople. Many experienced workers are nearing retirement. Did you know, at least one in three workers with an apprenticeship certificate is approaching retirement age¹. At the same time, apprenticeship registrations are rising. New registrations increased by over 7.3% to 28,875 in 2024–2025, with youth aged 15–24 increasing by over 13.5%².
With so many roles to fill and new apprentices entering the field, there’s never been a better time to consider a career in the trades.
Busting the Myths About Skilled Trades
Many people still have outdated ideas about trades careers. Let’s set the record straight:
Trades pay well: Skilled trades workers can earn between $80,000–$100,000 annually¹, often above the average Canadian salary. Many tradespeople also have opportunities for overtime or specialized work, which can further increase earnings.
Not all work is manual: Modern trades rely heavily on technical skills, problem-solving, and precision. For example, a carpenter or electrician may spend more time planning and using advanced tools than performing physical labour.
The trades are for everyone: Women and other underrepresented groups are excelling in trades roles, helping to make workplaces more diverse and inclusive. There are a range of programs, mentors, and supportive communities to help everyone succeed.
These myths have kept talented people from exploring the trades, but the reality is clear: it’s a career path full of opportunity, growth, and stability.
Why Now is the Perfect Time
Several factors make joining the trades more appealing than ever:
High demand for workers: Employers are actively hiring in nearly every trade, making it easier to find work after training. About one in eight job openings in Ontario is expected to be in skilled trades-related occupations by 2029².
Shorter, affordable education: Trade programs can often be completed in one to two years, compared to a four-year degree, meaning you can start earning sooner and avoid larger student debt.
Earn while you learn: Apprenticeships let you gain experience and income at the same time. You build real-world skills while completing your certification.
Government support: Ontario is investing $64.2 million over three years² to expand in-class apprenticeship training. This funding creates thousands of new training seats and helps remove financial barriers so students can focus on learning their trade.
With this combination of high demand, support, and competitive earnings, there’s no reason not to get started.
