Mason Jamieson arrived at the OSTTC shop ready to learn—and he quickly found himself right at home! As a student in the Introduction to Metal Fabricator (Level 1) program, Mason discovered that the best way to prepare for the industry was to get his hands on the tools from day one.

While many programs rely heavily on textbooks, Mason knew that the trades require a different approach. He immediately gravitated toward the hands-on nature of the training, where he worked directly with materials and real-world applications that went far beyond a traditional classroom setting.

“The best part was being in the shop and actually doing the work,” Mason says. “There’s a lot to learn, but the instructors make it easy to follow and keep it interesting.”

With the guidance of knowledgeable instructors and access to professional-grade equipment, Mason built a powerhouse foundation in both theory and practice. During the program, he successfully earned his welding tickets—developing a specialized skill set that translates directly to the demands of a busy job site. This combination of support and resources gave him the boost he needed to step into the workforce with total confidence.

That confidence certainly paid off! After successfully completing his program at OSTTC, Mason joined Ironworkers Local 736. Today, he applies the exact same skills he honed in the shop to his professional career.

“Everything I learned here, I use on the job,” he explains. “Nothing felt like a waste—it all matters.”

Looking ahead, Mason is focused on growth. He plans to continue working within the trade, building his experience and expanding his opportunities as a skilled fabricator. He is a prime example of how the right training can turn a passion for "doing the work" into a lifelong career.

When asked what advice he would give to anyone considering the Introduction to Metal Fabricator program, Mason’s message is straightforward:

“If you’re interested in welding or fabrication, just go for it.”

OSTTC is incredibly proud of Mason’s transition into the field with Ironworkers Local 736. We can’t wait to see the structures he helps build in the future!
