For Seneca Burning, the journey into the trades was about much more than just learning a new craft—it was about overcoming barriers and discovering what he was truly capable of. Seneca recently completed the Introduction to Metal Fabricator (Level 1) program at OSTTC, an experience he describes as both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Entering a new field can be intimidating, but Seneca used those challenges as fuel for personal and professional growth. While there were hurdles to clear along the way, the supportive environment at OSTTC pushed him to evolve and stay the course.
“It was a great experience,” he says. “There were challenges, but it was worth it.”
During his time in the program, Seneca focused heavily on honing his welding techniques. He immersed himself in various methods, preparing for the diverse opportunities that the fabrication world offers. More importantly, the program helped Seneca find the courage to step outside his comfort zone. By the time he reached graduation, he had transformed his initial hesitation into a rock-solid belief in his own potential.
“The program gave me that push,” he explains. “It helped me believe I could actually do this.”
That "push" led Seneca straight into the workforce. After completing his training, he joined Ironworkers Local 736. His daily life now is a dynamic mix of structural steel work, maintenance projects, bridgework, and industrial settings. No two days are quite the same, and Seneca is now applying the grit and skill he developed in the classroom to the skylines and infrastructure of our community.
Looking toward the future, Seneca’s sights are set on the next big milestone: completing his apprenticeship and becoming a certified journeyman. He is dedicated to building a stable, long-term career where he can continue to master his trade.
When asked what he would say to anyone standing where he once was—wondering if they should take that first step—his advice is as strong and direct as the steel he works with:
“Just do it.”
OSTTC is incredibly proud of Seneca’s resilience and the career he is building with Ironworkers Local 736. We look forward to watching him reach journeyman status and beyond!
